SciFi and Fantasy Art: 'Paladin' in color

Here's a rarity, a color picture. I usually don't color my pics because I think it takes detail away, but this one was done because I wanted to play with some oil pastels I had recieved from a friend.

This pic gives me a spooky feeling!! It is really creepy! But I still like it somehow. What is he?? A zombie? I really wouldn't like to meat him a dark night...

*admires* *grin* 's the same as the last pic, I can't put my finger on it, just exactly WHAT I feel when I look at it, and 's driving me crazy...maybe it's just that with that face; he could be a horrifying murderer, or the most gentle being...I can't define what I see...*frustrated*

::laughs:: Nope, he's not a zombie. He's a bit of a freak, an outcast perhaps... but definitely not undead. I always imagined him as very gentle, but fiercely protective of those who are close to him.

I really like the tattoo. I don't know why. I just do. It really stands out for some reason. Does it mean anything special? Could he belong to a special Order? Does it remind him of something bad in his past? A regret, perhaps? Hmm. There's so much possibility

It's funny. You draw a slim waisted woman as top heavy as this and you get all kinds of complaints about wrong proportions and "no real woman is built this way" kinds of outcrys from the feminist front. But draw a man with a waist so thin that his spine would crack under the weight of his upper body and ... nothing. Anyway, you have a good understanding of musclature. I can apprieciate this picture because it is fantasy. F-A-N-T-A-S-Y, folks, can be whatever you can imagine. Good job on this and your lovely dragons!

I just have to reply to the no-name commenter here... There is *clearly* a difference between drawing top-heavy, tiny-waisted women and this picture. I love this image, and the "odd" proportions suit it -- because it's stylized. Though the musculature is realistic, you can see that it is not strict realism... and to me, the body represents conflicting aspects of his character -- sweet face, very strong and powerful body. It makes you think, and delve deeper into the image. But (generally speaking) when women are depicted with breasts the size of watermelons strapped to their chest and waists that are 4 inches wide, their body and sex appeal is the whole focus, and that's it. Nothing more than a body. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with having a whittled midsection or being big-breasted (there are people like that, I know), but I believe you are misconstruing the "feminist outcries." In this image, his proportions are obviously exaggerated, but he is not his body, if that makes sense... there is more to him than huge pecs and biceps -- you can see it in his face. Whereas, when women are almost constantly depicted as nothing but eyecandy, that does tend to grate on people who value women as more than that. The line between fantasy and sexual fantasy is muddled in that sense. So please don't bash the "feminist commenters" without looking at the other side of the argument. And to Casey -- I apologize for taking up so much space with my ramblings on the matter, as it has very little to do with the image at hand... lol.

Anyway, now that I've got that off my chest, back to this wonderful piece of artwork! I think that the colors are so fitting -- it's warm and fierce at the same time... and that face is so endearing. It really catches you off guard -- you expect a hurly-burly face to go with the rippling muscles. This image really made me want to get to know this character -- that doesn't happen much. He looks so friendly to me... gentle, but could do a lot of damage if necessary. Your understanding of anatomy is fantastic... I envy your talent! You really should work with color more often, this is gorgeous. I see nothing wrong with it. Beautiful... simply beautiful...
