SciFi and Fantasy Art: Mortal lover IV

In my arms, I hold my lover, my all too mortal lover in these last moments before the first ray of the rising sun decides our destinies forever. Unlike my ancestors, the true phoenixes, I and all my race are made, not born. Like the vampires and werewolves, we begin as humans and undergo a change. The way of my people is this: When the time of rebirth comes upon us, we go and pass the night in one of the sacred places and in the first ray of sunrise, meet the flames of rebirth. If there is one we cannot leave behind, we pass this final night in loving and at dawn, take them with us. If all goes well, we will both be reborn together, both phoenixes now, but sometimes---well, that is why we never tell them first---You decide, which one is the were-phoenix and how does it end?

I stumbled upon this by chance. This is so carnal and moody. Extraordinary! The phoenix above the pair is a nice touch as well.

I think the were-phoenix is a girl. It's a femeline idea to drag your mate werever you go... 2 And hardly a man will have enough courage to offer his love such a trial. As for the happy end - it may be, but not of the hollywood kind. The two will be together, but when, where and which way?

Wow...this is very good.
But I have to disagree with most of the others; *I* think the were-phoenix is the guy. It just, I don't know, feels that way. As if he were to take his love to the skies.
Love the back story by the way.
