SciFi and Fantasy Art: Black Leogryph Leaping

This is a more realistic portrayal of the leogryph. The other side of the gryphon coin, a leogryph is a beast with the foreparts of a lion and the rear of an eagle. Mine tend to be more of a mountain lion/falcon shape, and the colors certainly don't hold true. Spent more than a week on this one. It's a watercolor, and I'll swear I spent four times as much time and effort on all those little leaves than I did on the leogryph. This pic is about 9 by 15 inches on 140 lb watercolor paper.

Oh, beautiful! Reminds me of an oldtime illustration in a children's book... Alice in Wonderland comes to mind for some reason. I love it!

It's certainly the first time I've heard of or seen a picture of a leogryph. I don't know why, it's such a cool concept. The picture is a bit dark, but it's very impressive.

Oh the foliage! 'Tis beautiful. I wish I had such background painting skills (or patience, rather). The Leo is stunning but the background is really what brings the painting together to make it a true gem. The beast is so much more real when seen in his habitiat. 2
