SciFi and Fantasy Art: Morkeleb the BlackPOssibly my favorite dragon in all of fantasy literature, Morkeleb the Black, from Dragonsbane and Dragonshadow, by Barbara Hambly. I hate the airship, but Morkeleb came out well enough for me to post. This is the first picture I did using a new Prismacolor technique, which I'm really thrilled with. Colored pencils on matboard, about 11 by 17'.

| 1 Apr 2003 | Nikki Resendes | WoW! the coloring is amazing! I can't even imagine how hard that would be in black....I always found the black was hard to do....you did fantabulously Beautiful Grace Dawn Palmer replies: "The trick to the blacks is that I first do an underbase in blues and violets: indigo for the shadows and very light blue or lavender for the areas that border bright highlights. Then, when I start adding the black I've got some color depth - normally black makes everything very flat." | |
| 2 Apr 2003 | thegreatmaiwholikespie | ACK!!!! A scary duckie! Its a quackums!! *Hokusai, Kei, and Yuri bop Mai on the head* oww!! "its not a duckie, mai...its a dragon...i think...." Kei stated staring at the picture. "No...its a quackums!" Mai argued. *Yuri bangs her head on the tree....asking..."Why? Why are we stuck with HER??"* "Cuz, I'm a magical unicorn!" mai replies.... this is really kewl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its so pretty....*wonders what the dragon would do if she tried petting it....* Grace Dawn Palmer replies: "Hmm. Given that this is Morkeleb, he'd probably philosophically take your arm off. Might feel guilty about it later, though." | |
| 6 Sep 2003 | Joelle Duran | I've got a weakness for black dragons...black anything, actually. He is simply gorgeous--and those eyes! Definitely not a creature to take lightly! Good work! | |
| 13 Nov 2003 | Jenny <marionette_jenn | I am an ardent fan of Morkeleb and I must say that you did a good job of representing him. I fell in love with him reading the books and I would swoon when I read how he talked to Jenny. (Yes, my real name is Jenny.) It is strange, though, because I have a boyfriend who wears glasses and is named John, also. Though that is besides the point. You are an incredible artist. | |
| 17 Dec 2004 | Anonymous | Very impressive portrayal of Morkeleb. He is, by far, the greatest dragon of fantasy literature.
The graceful and majestic qualities you assigned him definitely do him justice.
| 12 May 2005 | Kristen Nicole Vincent | Absolutely beautiful dragon! I haven't read those books, but his picture makes me want to read them! You painted the shadows well and did a great job of setting the black dragon apart from the darkened sky. | |
| 23 Mar 2006 | Kimberly mattia | Cccooooooollllllllll!!!!!! Awesome dragon! The your best picture yet! I like the texture of his skin and selik design! You dragon best, keep'em up! | |
| 31 Aug 2006 | Heather | This picture is amazing, and quite possibly my favourite picture of Morkeleb out there--there aren't that many, unfourtunately. You've captured that sort've catlike quality I feel he should have, and the majesty.
And the colors are absolutely freaking gorgeous. /envy.
