SciFi and Fantasy Art: Nak Nak SunsetNak Nak, a prominent member of a lemur tribe deep in the jungle. While the current tribe ie nearly feral, and exists on an alpha male and female system, they are descended from greatness. Five generations back their ancestors ruled the greatest, most advanced city in the world. But they became broud, then bitter, then jealous, and finally their rivalries broke into espoinage and war, and they came apart at the seams. Now illiterate, with barely a vocal language, Nak Nak and his tribesmen live in the trees surrounding the ruined city, guarding it, even though they have no idea why, they just know it is valuable. Pity be to those who tresspass in their part of the jungle, they are merciless hunters, and enjoy skinning outsiders alive, though they'll castrate them with a stone knife first should that outsider be male. Body paint is a common thing among them, allowing them to maintain a form of community, while expressing individuality. Modesty, however, has almost gone out the window.

All your characters have wonderful expressions, but this one especially. I'm thinking maybe the tree needs a little more texture. Last thing is I like the idea of body paint, but I'd like to seem more of it, and in a way that it seems to break up his body outline against the background (well, not this background, but the background he would be in if he was deep in the forest foliage). The body paint is not really to camoflauge them, in fact it is to make them stand out. Their tribe will only tolerate others of the same tribe in that area, and all outsiders are brutally killed. So, by marking themselves in a way that they can recognize as their own is a way to stay safe from each other.
| 25 Nov 2004 | Unanymous01 | Well, well, well. This is a lovely, creative piece; the best in your entire gallery, if I may be so bold! You have done a fine job with developing a history for Nak Nak, but, seeing that he is an anthropomorphic lemur, I would like to point out some things if you don’t mind. First and foremost, ring-tailed lemurs have a female dominant hierarchy; your suggestion of an alpha male and female is reminiscent of wolves. Second, lemur feet have opposable thumbs similar to their hands. Third, Nak Nak’s body paint is rather unneeded, seeing as male lemurs have scent glands near their wrists and throat that they use to mark territory and slather over their tails to “stink fight” for mating rights. This means that if Nak Nak stays within his tribe’s boundaries, then he wouldn’t need the markings. Also, scents are like fingerprints- no lemur smells the same; that means that all a fellow tribesman/woman would need to do to determine exactly who a specific individual is; all they would need to do is be within ten feet of said lemur and sniff around. For more information about lemurs in general, see http://biology.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.monkeymatters.com/species.htm, a very informative page! Like I said, this piece is wonderful, I can tell that you are a very talented artist, and I would also like to apologize if I have offended you in any way with my extensive ramblings. It’s not that your art is bad; it’s that I’m going to be a primatologist when I grow up, so I get a little uptight when people don’t get certain details right. Like I said, (and will say for at least another decade!) I’m sorry if I offended you! While I appreciate your extensive research on lemurs and whatnot, in the case of these guys, science and realism is takign a flying leap out the window to make room for creativity. And, I'm not offended, I did actually know a decent amount of that information, but chose to disregard it so that I could use some other influence from South American tribes instead. | |
| 7 Dec 2004 | Dana Lyn Naney | Wow i like this pic a lot...his tall slender form is very fitting. Keep up the good work!
~DanaI'm glad you like it. I've deviated from real lemurs in several aspects in this one, but it still carries the attitude I wanted.
| 2 Jan 2005 | Monkey | Awsome, I love the sunset. he looks friendly, but if you do something bad, you can sxpect not to wake up in the morning. he's so skinnyOh, no, you'd wake up. These fellows like their victims awake when the skin them alive and/or castrate them. | |

| 25 Oct 2007 | Obsidian | I love him. I love tribal culture, how raw it all is, and this is so portraying. I love the highlights, and body paint, I love how he's standing, and his pose. And living in such wild terrain, modesty is encumburing =P. (Is that right?!) I love it. One of my favourites, keep it up (please ^__^)Just wait until I get my other lemurs up here... | |
