SciFi and Fantasy Art: Daervin BrunstyreThis is a portrait of my D&D character, Daervin. As of this portrait, he is a 12th-level character, with 3 levels rogue, 4 levels bard, 2 levels fighter and 3 levels shadowdancer. Though a human, Daervin stands at a mere 5'6', 135 lbs. His wit is as quick as his +2 rapier of frost, however, and he'll be the first to joke about his height. |

Yet the pose seems awkward to me. Kind of unbalanced, as if he could tip over at any moment (this would probably be fine if I could see his feet, and if his ankle didn't curve so much because it would then simply look as if his weight was supported by the arm wrapped around the wall), and the angle of his hips compared to his torso seems like a very exaggerated twist. Despite that, his stance, together with the flowing cape, and the shadows cast across his face effectively convey a mysterious narrative, as if this is a glimpse of Daervin taking refuge in the shade of the wall as he waits for the perfect moment to run towards some treacherous goal. His left hand portrays some kind of apprehension, whereas the rest of his stance, to me anyway, shows experience and fluid movement. His whole face is grave, with sad eyes and mouth, yet handsome. And by your description he seems to have a sense of humor. A very nice portrait of an interesting character Timothy. Timothy R. Haldane replies: "I noticed as I was drawing him that his stance appeared slightly off balance, which is partly why his hand is grasping the wall as such, but I went with it anyway. The reason why is that Daervin has the ability to hide inside shadows, and I thought it was appropriate to have his lower body appear to sink into the shadow of the wall itself. But now I'm making excuses. Great response, though! Thanks for dropping by!"

Nice job. Timothy R. Haldane replies: "Thx for the kind words, I do appreciate it. Daervin is indeed a bit of a swashbuckler, so the pose is meant to show both grace and confidence. Good to know it's recognizable to a real fencer. Thanks for dropping by!"
| 13 Sep 2005 | Simon S. Gao | Cool pose. Like jess, i think the shadowy look is nice. But i'm confused by two things. Is that spear-like thing hanging underneath his knee a spear or...A tail? And over his left (looking view's right) shoulder, what's the smoke thingy? Timothy R. Haldane replies: "Yeah, I guess I didn't mention above that the picture has changed since Jessica's comment. First, the spike behind him is indeed a spear - a short-spear that instantly extends to a long-spear. In this pic, it is often confused for a tail, but it seemed only natural that he'd keep the spear behind him like that. And the smoke thingy was supposed to be shadow around him. Since he's a shadowdancer, he takes on a darker, almost ghostly and ephemeral look. Think of him like a rogueish batman/phantom of the opera/errol flynn type." | |

| 5 Sep 2007 | Timothy Allen McNeil | I like it, but not as much as the older Daervin Brunstyre picture where he was creeping around a corner. He seems so much angrier here. | |
