SciFi and Fantasy Art: Forest Guardian

This piece took a couple weeks to complete because I did it entirely in Prismas. While I am pleased with the overall look, I am aware that there is something strange about the stunted wings, which are held directly out from the body... The setting is rather cliche for me. I find that I often place my dragons in either caves or the woods. I think it's an obsession.

This reminds me so much of the Jeff Easley painting with the big red dragon coming at us. Nice work with the prisma colors.

:-) Timothy R. Haldane replies: "LOL, you know, I think maybe I had that one in mind! Comic books (X-Men), cartoons (Thundercats), and those 1st-edition D&D painted covers were my very first inspirations to draw. Easley's painting probably was sitting there in my subconscious directing the whole act of drawing it."

Stunted wings explaination (justification) to follow: because of the dense forest environment this dragon lives in, it primarily moves by walking on all fours to crawl through dense underbrush. Therefore, it never even learned to fly and the wings barely developed into adult wings at all as it matured.

The wings are standing straight out because the dragon is attacking and the wings are reacting as part of a reflex, such as a modern day animal's ears or tail might.

How's that?
