SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Blind Lead the Blind

The blind beasts had amazing reactions, and could function, of course, in total darkness. Better yet, they could mask and control their heat signatures, rendering them all but undetectable. They were large enough to bear a rider, and could cover almost any terrain. The problem was, they were untameable. Then, a breakthrough was made. If a synthetic heat-control gland were implanted in a human, not only could he comunicate with the beasts, taming them in mere weeks, but he would developed their same heat-masking abilities. The only problem was, most humans could not control the gland, and died from hypothermia. It was discovered that only the experienced blind could adapt quickly enough to use the gland properly. The survival rate was still small, less than 50%, but with the added bonus of regained awareness (if not sight), many blind were willing volunteers.

*First Comment Victory Dance* Oh wow. Holy Nuts even. A cool creature, notes, compared sizes, history. Just wow. I did one about this horse/eagle/lion thing, it had the front legs of an eagle, back legs of a lion, horse's head, eagle wings, horse's build, lion's tail. Wasn't a hippogryph, but same animals. Go you, I gotta fill up me 2 galleries more as it is. Off to doodle, toodles! Rhyming...how I hate it ^.^;;;

I like it. As a principle I'm prepared to accept things for game and arty purposes that I would mock severely if they were suggested with a straight face, but this is an adventurous use of quasi-credible biology to support fantasy plot. Good. Also, find if you can Somtow Sucharitkul's 'The Dawning shadow vol 1; The Light on the Sound'; SF novel, which includes a race of blind hunters who have forgotten why they put their own eyes out at puberty. Turns out it's to protect them from the paralysingly intense beauty of the creatures they hunt, which of course they've never actually seen...
