SciFi and Fantasy Art: Finduilas and Faramir

This is a bittersweet portrait of mother and son right before the time when Finduilas perished. Tolkien never explained her death, but by my reconing, her husband already had the Palantir and I have always wondered if Sauron didn't inspire Denethor to *accidentally* murder her....

Anonymous: Actually, Faramir was 5-ish and Boromir was about 10.

Anyway... I love this picture, and although I have, passing your page, seen it more than once, I never reviewed it. I was somewhat lost for words. I love her expression and the tilt of her head. It's as though she's gazing through the window, trying to see the sea city she loved so much. And the tenderness with which she hold her son is absolutely tangible in every line of her body. It's an incredibly well-drawn, beautiful picture and I'd like to thank you for sharing it with us.

Tar-Miriel - Thank you!!!!! I know who everybody is talking about now. I don't know how I could have been so stupid. *smacks self* It's Boromir and Faramir's mother, isn't it??? The one that the cloak Faramir gave Eowyn belonged to?? I think I got it now. 12

God I love your stuff.
Your drawings are.. what I want to draw.
I wouldn't normally consider Finduilas (I'm more of a Theodwyn person myself, but she looks like a wench whenever I draw her) as a great subject, but... wowers.

Denethor murdering thing? Woah. That's deep, man.

and, as usual, I have one, pathetic, Eowyn-dedicated complaint:

Where's her trademark blue cloak with the stars?

! ! !

I saw your Finduilas/Boromir/Faramir sketches, a while back, on the Rolozo Tolkien board and only now, browsing, realised this is you!

How lovely to have the chance to tell you how absolutely gorgeous I find your work.

Weel I think is actually says somewhere in the appendices that she (finduilas II) perished out of pure grief, I think it was something about longing for the sea and always being afraid of the shadow of Mordor or something of that sort.
But it's a really nice picture, me likes!!

I love this picture, but I disagree entirely with your assessment of Denethor. There is nothing in canon to suggest that he had anything to do with the death of his wife - it expressly states in the Unfinished Tales how much Denethor loved his wife.

Though I totally disagree with your assessment of Denethor, this drawing is beyond belief beautiful.

This is a Finduilas who I can relate to. As another said, the tilt of her head, the hands holding Faramir touch my heart. Incredibly beautiful drawing.

But I love Denethor and his entire family.

Once again, simply wonderful. Though personally, I always thought that Finduilas died from child birth.

*sniffs*... she looks like she's looking up to heaven and knows she's going to die... Gorgeous, I love the tilt of her head and the way Faramir is sitting on here lap... wonderful
