SciFi and Fantasy Art: Imrahil

Yeah.... I love this very unsung lotr hero. Tolkien obviously held him in high regard and I love the bits of his family in H.O.M.E. volume 12 (I think it was vol. 12) Anyway, people often say that because he was very handsome that is why Tolkien called him Imrahil the 'fair'. But I think that since Tolkien never named any other male character 'the Fair' and there were plenty that were beautiful, that he meant that he was fair haired. I support this by argueing that in a culture where there are a lot of noble, beautiful Numenorian decended men, all of whom are dark haired....what is more remarkable and therefore worthy of the unheard of monaker of 'fair' from Tolkien, someone who is merely lovely, or someone who is oddly colored compared to others of his kin. Tolkien refers to no male elves as even being 'fair' so I doubt it is a beauty issue. Hence I have always imagined Imrahil as a dark sandy blond. So sue me.

Yeah, lovely. We get to see so little of poor Imrahil. In response to the other comments:

Yes, Elfwine, the son of Eomer and Lothiriel, was also called 'the Fair'. In Unfinished Tales it is stated that this was because he looked a lot like his grandfather Imrahil.

All your men portraits are just lovable! Maybe because you do seem to love them while you draw them? Anyway, special thanks for this one. There are not so much Imrahil portraits around there. Even if I rather share Isabeau's point of view...
By the way, I wondered if the 3rd LOTR film shared your opinion... Did you notice that clear-haired guy in a fancy armour?

Wow, great pic! He is looking cute. 2
I have always loved Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, so I'm glad someone finally drew him! Personally I imagine his hair colour darker, almost black. But that's of course my vision. And above that: in my imagination they ALL have black hair, so some blondies are always nice. 2)

I love the way he looks out of the frame. And the picture radiates a warmth I've long associated with the character 2

And "The Fair" is also an epithet attatched to Celegorm son of Feanor (though I've read varying opinions on his hair color) and definitely to the dark-haired Boromir son of Denethor. Perhaps in Imrahil's youth, the word applied both ways?

Actually, Legolas comments on Imrahil's appearance in the book. He says he can see that Imrahil's line has Elvish blood in it because of his height, dark hair and grey eyes, and generally noble appearance.

Beautiful drawing, though. I love it. Although I've pictured him as very tall and very serious. This is really a great picture. I love ALL of your work, I just had to comment on this one. 2

He really is an unsung hero! Or so I thought until I saw all the comments on your picture. He is one of my favorite characters and its great to see such a wonderful picture of him! I took fair to mean beautiful, but I was never sure how to picture his hair so I think blonde works. Anyway, awesome picture! You're my hero! (oh, and I love his expression)

i love the idea of him with blonde hair, though this picture is not the way i would have seen Imrahil, but its well done none the less. i certainly cant do better. i love the way you capture more than just their faces, you really get their character in it, very good on that fact!!

Well, Imrahil, appart from being a general badass worthy of Sam L. Jackson, was called "the Fair" becaseu of his "elven and Numorean blood and his noble demeanor." He was described as being dark haired and sea-gray eyed.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but those are the words from Tolkein's mouth (Don't ask me where)

Hmmm... I guess I really should comment on the picture that I look at the most whenever I'm reviewing your work (which is pretty often). This Imrahil is just exquisite - very handsome, masculine, intelligent and sexy. This image is the one I most often carry when reading about him. Except that mine does have dark hair...

My own two cents: Tolkien never specifically describes Imrahil, only the Swan Knights entering MT and Dunedain in general. His "beardlessness" is apparently what tipped off Legolas, somehow. On the other hand, Tolkien does use "the Fair" to describe extraordinary beauty/handsomeness. Thus, it's not even artistic license to give him blond hair - it's a perfectly acceptable personal vision. 2

I would be enthralled by any drawings of any hair-color Imrahil you wish to gift on the world. Or Andra. 1
