SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Angel Next Door

A very pretty girl, very shy, just moved in next door.  I always think about different ways I could meet her, different ways to strike up a conversation, but I always just wave nervously when she looks my way, and she smiles and quickly looks away.
The other day I finally worked up the nerve to introduce myself, but when she appeared around the corner, I was speechless...

are these ur only works? ur an AMAZING artist its not even funny

:-) Ian Paul Houston replies: "I have plenty more already drawn, though not all of them qualify for the "fantasy/sci-fi" theme, so they won't end up on this site. But I've submitted another 8 or 9 pieces to Elfwood... with any luck, some of them will be accepted and you'll see them here very soon! Thanks for taking the time to comment!"

Very nice shading work. The wings are fantastic too 2

:-) Ian Paul Houston replies: "Thanks, Jason. Sorry for the delay in replying... with the extranet down I've been away from Elfwood for a while.I'm a big fan of wings, but they are quite difficult to draw. Maybe it's the challenge I love."

Your write up of this angel is as beautifully written as she is drawn. You've captured her expression remarkably. Where do you get your inspiration?

44 Ian Paul Houston replies: "Well, person that I don't know because you are anonymous, I'm inspired by many things:the way you bite your lip, for example, and look up from beneath your eyelashes. The sunlight in your red, red hair. Possibly I'm even inspired by the way I catch you looking at other men, and you blush so prettily. If I knew who you were, I might be inspired by these sorts of things."

This is my favorite...she is so pretty and excuse me for saying her happy cushion is very nicely drawn! I've attepted drawing such things and what disasters oh my.... The wing is remarkable too!... =)

1 Ian Paul Houston replies: "Why thank you!But did you just say "happy cushion?""

Guess I'm one of the fortunate ones who can still log in. Go figure. Just revisited your gallery due to your comment about the spider warrior . Thanx, by the way. It was meant to cause nightmares. You have validated it. Anyway, I am still a fan. Being essentially a sketch artist myself, I am very intrigued by your work, The musculature in this picture, for instance; it shows a lot of thought. I wish there was some way to show you some of my nudes, but they don't allow them here. My email addy is eveyesthal@hotmail.com if your interested. Again, great work.

:-) Ian Paul Houston replies: "Thanks for the comments on my art. I have since encountered a spider warrior much like the one you've drawn during a D&D game... with the visual imagery of your art still fresh in my mind, the scene became very vivid for me, so thanks for that!As for the musculature... I was working from a photo, but at some point while shading it occurred to me that actually USING her wings would be quite a workout... so I tried to give the impression of a little extra muscle, without making her too beefy."

This is amazing work ian paul houston =)
the way everything flows together is perfect, what is it done in? when ever im working on my artwork and it doesnt look just the way i want it to i end up crumpling it up and saying why can i never get it just right?! (this mostly happens in water color) you are my inspiration...please put more pictures up soon =) i cant wait to see more.

:-) Ian Paul Houston replies: "Thank you for the comment! I drew this with graphite art pencils, I think a range from 2f to 7b, if I remember correctly... I always get them mixed up... when I look at a set of pencils I usually think, "Hmm, I need a darker one..." rather than "I'll use the 4b!"I used to throw out my artwork all the time, too... but I think for personal growth as an artist, that's the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot; it cripples you.The best thing to do is save all your art and forget about it for a while. One day you'll go back and look through all your old work, and see how much you've progressed... you may even find a good idea that you can attempt with more skill than you had before. So stop throwing it out!"

I would love to be able to do this kind of shading. I think of it more as "artist's" shading whereas what I do is more like "cartoonist's" shading. Very well done and deserving of a mod's choice in my opinion. (I think graphite scares them.)

45 Ian Paul Houston replies: "Thank you for the compliment! I don't really need a mod's choice award... if people like yourself are visiting my gallery and finding something inspiring in my art, I'm already very pleased indeed!"

Ian, I pray you will keep working! This is an exceptional piece! You have amazing talent and a way of capturing emotion that is no small thing! I love your work! *claps* Bravo! More!!!

1 Ian Paul Houston replies: "A guy could live off praise like this, I think...
Thank you so much for your compliments. I will be endeavoring to put more art up on Elfwood as it finds its way out of me. All I ask is that you're patient with me... it can be a frustrating process to coax the art to happen."

Love the art. Wish I could see it un-censored.
