SciFi and Fantasy Art: Caliea Stromguard

[12in x 20in colored pencil]
This is a character portrait done for Karen Staton, who bought the picture at an American Red Cross auction (at DarkCon 6) prior to the image being conceived. She then furnished me with a description of her mage aboard a sailing ship in the Dragonlance setting.

Unfortunately Karen is no longer with us, and her presence at the table will be missed.

Excellent detail on the ship and great work with the colored pencils! I'm in awe at the ambitious angle you've taken on the picture. The girl's legs look strange, but the picture is good.

:-) Jeremy Clay Fowler-Lindemulder replies: "I think I twisted her foot a bit too much in the sail. It seems to work though. One can assume the position. Her entire body is drawn from a close up perspective, making her proportions diminish rapidly as the distance increases. I did this to match the perspective of the ship."

The perspective on this one is great! Makes me a little dizzy with the height. Wonderful detail.

this is wonderfull - reminds me of a dream i had a very long time ago - that was sort of about the s.c.a. before i'd ever been to an event or entirely knew what it was all about - the name stromgaard makes me think of a barony or shire if memory surves somewhere near drakonveldt in what is now part of an tir ... (which i've probably munged the spelling on just about all of - anyway this is realy great ... ~12

Wow, what great perspective! I've never been that great at it, myself, especially in such detail. The detail itself is great! I like the asymmetry and the composition of this piece, I like the color...1 I like all of it. The girl's legs DO look a bit odd, but it's probably the perspective. It's hard to avoid, really. Maybe if you'd made her upper body a hair smaller in proportion with her lower...I think it's a bit of an extreme perspective compared with the rest of the picture, especially at close distance. The water looks really good, but a bit grainy. It's hard to do sea water, I know. Overall, lovely job! 1 I wish I could color decently.

:-) Jeremy Clay Fowler-Lindemulder replies: "Thanx. I liked this picture a lot more before I scanned it. What looks good on paper, often breaks down when it finally becomes a jpg file under 100K."
