This picture was inspired by some morbid little part of me that was dissatisfied with the rather tame depictions of the Goddess Justice that are normally to be found in courthouses and murals. If when you look at this picture your first reaction is confusion, then horror, then I've received exactly the reaction I was striving for. That was certainly the reaction of my fiancee at seeing it. :)

In the drawing of the picture I was practicing several things. First and foremost was practicing drawing clothes, her clothes are supposed to be a kind of a thin gossamer robe draped around her, similar to classical Greek depictions of clothed figures. Second I was practicing proportion, positioning, and was trying (but failed to) draw the figure being looked down on from a shallow angle instead of just strait on. I think I must have picked the angle to be too shallow. I was also practicing some tips and techniques I got from the fun How to Draw Manga website, and that shows up in her face and neck, as well as a little of her legs.

Finally, I was practicing cell shading because I'm quite frankly tired of doing nice smooth realistic shading because it takes forever. Cell shading has a look I just love, and it's vastly simpler and takes much less time. I do find it a little hard though, because the shading areas must be chosen with the utmost care, and I will need more practice.

UPDATE!! This is the definitive, new and improved version of this picture, and not the crappy sketch that it was. It was suprisingly a lot of fun to clean up! I almost exclusively used the pen tool in Photoshop to do the entire picture, lines and shading. For those who know about the tool, I didn't just use the 'stroke path' feature, what I did was create the whole shape of the line as an enclosed path, then filled the path with a color. Doing this I could get very dynamic lines - I was striving for an inked look like you'd see in a comic book. It honestly didn't take that long to do either, maybe twelve hours total. I'll leave the detail of the original sketch up, and probably put the original picture on my personal website. Sketches may not be as finished looking, but they have a certain energy that always gets lost a bit when you clean it up.

Anyway, this picture is much more tattoo ready, so if another person miraculously wants to tattoo this on themselves, my only price is that you send a picture of the finished tattoo to me. I'd also like to know a bit of why you'd want it done, just out of curiosity. I mean, I love the picture but I don't love it THAT much, and I drew it!

You did a wonderful job on the fabric of her clothes, and I love the way the whole picture flows and moves. It really heightens the impression of her walking towards you.
Very original idea of the "Justice is blind," idea. The way justice has been lately, maybe they SHOULD go for this idea, instead of the blindfold.

That was some pic you drew jenny. One day i was searching on the net looking for any type of different pic of justice for a tattoo that i wanted. Every pic i seen of justice was boring and traditional. Then i stumbled upon your pic on this site, and whoa, at first i said this is a lil sick for me, with the eyes gouged at and in her hand. Then i slept on it, and decided that the way i felt about justice i recieved it was exactly right, and i hope your not mad, but your picture of justice is tattooed on my right arm very big, there's a few variations to it, but it's your pic, and i'm very happy with it. Thanks for the great pic i wouldn't have gotten this tattooed if it was any other pic.

I love the dramatic shading and defined lines you've used on this drawing. You've also done a nice job on the foreshortening on her right hand. I would recommend doing something to bring it out a little more however. I had a hard time discerning where it was. Perhaps a little darker shading behind it? Nicely done!

This one is elegant compared to the other piece, but they are both so beautiful and creepy at the same time! Wonderful!
