SciFi and Fantasy Art: Daphne, Tree Spirit

Call it what you will; tree spirit, sprite, Entwife... Lately, I had been silently admiring the gracefulness of trees, how their branches and twigs seem to reach out towards an infinity they know they will never quite grasp. My imagination found the similarities between limbs and limbs (tree and human) to be quite striking. While sitting in my Public Speaking class, I suddenly had the urge to draw this. I was thinking of how I could shape the setting and history of the world in which my story takes place. These tree spirits (though no longer in existance since the purge of magic) were inhabitants of Midori Forest, surrounding Gythriel's (AKA Aranya's) sacred glade. Their roots (pun intended- I meant geneology) connect them with those of elf and faerie kinship. They are more closely related to the 'living' elementals. Believe it or not, I had never endeavored to draw a tree before this. ^_^

Wow, first comment...I think this is really pretty artwork, and my only question with it (yep, I have to be critical, hehe) is that the spirit almost seems at some point to be stepping out of the tree, creating a double effect, as if there are two trees or an echo of the first. Maybe you were going for that, or maybe no, but it's great either way! Keep up the good work.

actually, Daphne was a Nymph, she was transformed into a tree by "mother nature" to git away from Apolo. He chased her into the forest. Since she was a Nymph, she wanted nothing to do with him, she had a choice of staying in the forest, or marieing Apolo. She picked the Forest and she was transformed into a tree, she was not a spirt at all...
