I just had to comment, because I noticed another being sharing the space of this picture with the Gryphon: A DRAGON!
If you view the tips of the feathers as the dragon's 'spiny frilly things' that fan out from the side of the dragon's (some dragons anyway), and the open space in the front edge of the wing as its eye, it becomes obvious.
From there it is easy to make out that the head of the Gryphon is the flame coming out of the dragon's nostril, which is just below and takes the form of the chest/front leg of the Gryph. The hind leg and haunches of the Gryph becomes the grimacing mouth with some teeth showing. The tail of the Gryph is coming off the dragon's chin.
I really hope someone besides me can see it, or I will feel foolish...
