SciFi and Fantasy Art: Mermaid

I did this picture, several years ago, it's inspired by a pictur of Rogue I saw in a X-men magazine. She's done with black ink, unfortunatly I didn't know about grades of paper at the time, so it's already began to yellow.

well i think this is a very good piece especially for an early one but the neck needs work it seems to be alittle to long and her head is at a strange angle when compared to the rest of her body

Being a fantastical creature I am sure that the anatomy of a mermaid is as mysterious as they are. This is a nicely balanced picture. Some dark detailing in the rock upon which she sits would make it a perfectly balanced picture! I have tons of pen and ink on typing paper that are all a nice "peepee" yellow myself!!

The upper portion is wonderful, and I love the contrast you've acheived with the inks, but her tail is jointed too much like human legs. It looks as though she is wearing a fish-tail suit, albeit an attractively textured one.

Its a good picture but the neck is too long along with the arms. The hands like kinda weird also, too small and "claw like" maybe. Also instead of maybe the musculare, trim, fit look you might have been going for she looks more like she is emacicated old and nearly dead. This is none the less a VERY good picture for early drawing. amazing really.

I think she's beautiful! I love the pose and all of the detail work in the tail. The whole look of her gazing into the distance, gives a dreamy effect to the picture.

:-) Jason Hood replies: "thanks for visiting my galary - and glad you like this pick - after a few of the comments above I was wondering if it wasn't as good as I thought it was -and usually I'm my own worst critic. Personally I just think she looks so free in the picture -no worries just time to think and feel the breeze - wish I had the time to."

She's a beauty. You should color her 2

:-) Jason Hood replies: "i've really been considering it -but if I do I think I may work off a copy -I'd hate to ruin the original after all this time."

:-) Jason Hood replies: "thanks for noticing I did her years ago -but she's remained a favorite of mine"

Wow - the detail in the tail, hair and arm/wrist bands is awesome. I am not usually drawn to black and white sketches but this was just delightful to look at! Very nice piece.
