SciFi and Fantasy Art: On the Ashes of the AncientsThis is a commission that I did for this one fellow. I only charged him $60 for supplies, 'cause he worked at Disney with me, and I knew he wasn't making much. He wanted a dragon painting. I gave him five different choices, and this one (my least favorite of the five) he chose. 'Fine', I thought, 'No big deal, it's a cool composition, I'll have fun with it. Besides, I'm not really doing it for him, but just to get me into the habit of doing paintings.' 'Oh, by the way', he said, 'Can you make the dragon purple? It's for my girlfriend, and she loves purple!' Purple??? Uuuuugggghhhh..... If that wasn't enough, he took forever to pay me for it, siting one problem or another, ranging from dead pets to dead cars. My advice to budding amatuer artists? GET YOUR MONEY UP FRONT! | |

| 3 Jan 2002 | Amber M. Vinz | I do like it but it makes me wonder if this was your least favorite then what would your favorite one look like... I know I always draw better when my heart is set on something. I am glad you made him purple though.. You know purple dragons are rare!! Keep it up! | |

| 24 May 2003 | Lans | Here we have two different voices: those who say its a piece of crap and those who admire you and put you as their god! Well Lets say its very "different" and "original" too. Do you understand what im thinking? | |
| 10 Sep 2003 | Suz Bateson | Nice work! This image definitely has some potential. Two things would really kick it up a notch for me, though - anatomy and foreground/background considerations. Remember that dragon wings are generally made of bone and membrane, and bones aren't usually bendy. I use my hand as reference and try to imagine my fingers being elongated. As for the foreground/background thing, what I mean by that is simple contrast and atmospheric effects. Generally, as things recede into the distance they become more faded, more grey. The mountains and grounds below are very saturated, so they actually try to jump into the foreground with the dragon. Next time try making the dragon and the rocks it perches on more bright and saturated, and fade the background a bit towards the horizon. It's a shame the client asked for purple, but that's what happens when one does commissions. | |
