SciFi and Fantasy Art: Best Friends

This picture was somewhat popular in its first incarnation as a pencil sketch. A couple people urged me to do a painted version of it and my response was 'Perhaps, one day, many years from now, I'll do another version of it, but I'm in no hurry to do that.' Of course, two weeks later I started this painting. I'd always envisioned the sketch as more of a spring picture, but this one is obviously fall. I do so many pictures with bright and contrasting colours I wanted to do one with a limited colour scheme.

They spent the last four years fighting side-by side in a war. Though circumstances made them grow close, they had no time to even give thought to romance. They were both wounded in the last battle and wanted to get some fresh air. She is not as fully as recovered as she had though and is now drifting off to sleep. He sits there thinking how wondeful it is to finally be able to relax. He has no idea that in exactly 9.73 seconds he's going to look down and fall completely, madly, desperately, and hopelessly in love.

Gorgeous! It reminds me of a rennaissance fair and a couple of civil war reenactments I go to (that are also in the fall!).

Hehehe. 9.73 seconds. LOL. But I thought in the sketch there was water. Oh darn it if I've gone and made a fool of myself commenting on the sketch and saying I liked the water. Anyway, it looks really nice in colour.

1 Jessica Menn replies: "No, you were right. There was water in the sketch. But, in this painting adding a little stream wouldn't have worked as well because the sketch was on a rectangular piece of paper and the painting is on an oval. In the sketch, the stream helped draw the picture together compositionally, but in the painting it would just have detracted from it."

*waits 9.73 seconds with camera in hand...awww...* The color scheme and the poses are phenomenal. Ladies and gentleman, this artist can not only paint, but write, too! *cheers* Beautiful.

Oh, I forgot one thing. I also like the fact that they are falling in love, but are of different races. It warms my heart when people can overlook the boundary of race and see the individual for who they are, not where they're from!

22 Jessica Menn replies: "How did you know they're from different races? It's true; they are. She's a noble fairy, and his mother is half elvish, but how did you *know*? I didn't say anything about it in the picture description. Whoah. You're freaky, but in a good way."

Well, Ms. Joshua J Marsh, you said you wanted to practice a limited color scheme. I think you fared very well! Nicely executed! Wonderful story. Perhaps you'll consider doing a follow-up picture?

Their faces told me. The hue and saturation of the color (not the brightness) of their skin told me they are of different races. If I'd just followed brightness, it would of been folly. What if her face was darker just because of the shade cast upon her by the tree? No, it's the type of coloring used that tips off their racial difference. But looking back, at your reaction, I realize that it's possible that it might just have been accidental? I don't believe that to be the case however. I admire how you captured that minor detail.

:-) Jessica Menn replies: "No, it wasn't accidental. I did intentionally vary their skin colour, but the difference seemed so slight to me I'm surprised anyone noticed. Props to you 2"

Oh, I love how this turned out. I remember liking the sketch very much, too. Lovely muted pallet.

1 Jessica Menn replies: "Thanks, Ellen. I always like hearing from you 2 The picture isn't Epilogue quality, so I intend to go back and, hopefully, get it up to that level, but I'm glad some people still like it as it is 2"

The tree and rest of the background are great, but you need to work a little more on the couple's faces.

12 Jessica Menn replies: "Yeah, the faces are a bit wonky. This is one of my earlier paintings and it definitely shows. I'm getting much better at doing small details and such in my paintings. 2"

This is really good. I love the little story along with it it makes the picture a lttle more romantic. It's great.
