SciFi and Fantasy Art: Grograman the Many-Coloured Death

There have been dozens of books and stories I've read and been inspired to paint pictures about, but for some reason I never have--not for C.S. Lewis, not for J.R.R. Tolkien, not for Edgar Allen Poe. Oddly enough, the book I've done my first illustration for was a book I didn't particularly care for--at least plot-wise. Plot aside, The Neverending Story was filled with tons of fanciful places and characters. This is Grograman the king of the Goab Desert.

The imagery in that book is great, isn't it? This is just how I imagined that bit. Well done.

This is so incredibly beautiful.

I never thought the description of Goab could be so well-translated into visual media. This is haunting, surreal, captivating and wonderfully faithful to the book. You have my undying adoration.

Wow! How did you get the colour sooo smooth?

:-) Jessica Menn replies: "I think the smoothness is mostly a result of excessive use of the smudge tool. Beyond that, digital is normally a pretty smooth medium anyways."

never even heard of the book... but it looks real good. ill have ta read it sometime. Anywayz, whatz goin on with "graograman"? does he change colors when he runs into a different colored part of the desert... that's what it looks like...

:-) Jessica Menn replies: "Yes, he does change colour every time he moves onto a different coloured sand dune. As I said up in the description of this picture, I didn't think "The Neverending Story" was that great a book as far as the plot went. But, it was filled with interesting and very imaginative places and creatures. And, if nothing else it's something of a fantasy classic, so, yeah, you might want to check it out."

Uhm... WHAT? o_0 Have we read the same book? OK, the plot may be a bit strange in the second half, but the point should become clear, at the latest in the last few chapters..!

:-) Jessica Menn replies: "I wouldn't call the plot of the second half of the book "strange". I actually prefered the section after he entered Fantastica to the first part of the book. I also understood what the point was supposed to be, but I, personally, don't think Michael Ende executed it particularly well. The characters and their motivations seemed somewhat forced to me--they never came alive. That is simply my opinion and you're welcome to disagree. However, I don't like people implying that I didn't pay attention to a book I've read and have taken the time to comment on, or have somehow failed to grasp the basic plot.If nothing else, in spite of all my problems with The Never Ending Story, I *did* take the time to paint a picture about it, which I have not done for any other book I have ever read."

Mmmh, ok then. It was just the "lacked an over-all point" line that gave that impression... -.-'
