SciFi and Fantasy Art: Mermaid and the Sailor ('02)

Nudity - last chance to hit the 'back' button.

I went on a trip to Italy in March of 2001 and ended up getting stuck overnight at the Newark airport on my return flight. This started as a doodle while I was waiting. I had most of it done by the time I got home, but then it sat in my sketchbook for eight or nine months until I decided to finish it recently. It has some lighting and anatomy problems, but it's not bad for a sketch. I may attempt this in some other media sometime and give myself a chance to correct the boo-boos and maybe put in a background.

As for the story of what is going on in the drawing - what do you think? Is she drowning him or saving him? Your call. ;-)

I got bored. I made wallpaper. You can find it here.

2/02, 9x12 sketchpad, mechanical pencil, graduated pencils

Update 4/04, I added in his foot by redrawing it on a separate piece of paper and combining the scans.

She's drowning him.

Great foreshortening on the man. One of the hardest things to do in art but you've got it down perfectly. Congrats. Also, the way you've shaded out the eyes is very nice. I like the mermaids hair, the way it flows like her ocean. It could just be me but her tail seems to be a bit small/narrow. Great work anyways!

I don't think she's made up her mind yet. She's looking into his face trying to see what kind of man he is.

I don't think she's drowning him or saving him. I think she's laughing at him. It doesn't seem like she makes any real effort to pull him down,. or up, but she swims deliberately around him, showing off the fact that she can. -shrugs- that's what it looks like to me.

I really like it, though. It has a lot of personality. A lot of artists seem to miss that in their work. You didn't.

Nice site and drawing!

Did you get this story from Ocean's song, "Siren Song"?

I read an interview with her about the theme of the song and
she said in it it had been written for her "Mermaid and Sailor" story!

Her site is at http://www.OceanMusic.com
and her CD - i have it, i'm a fan - is named Mermaid Music that that song is from.

I say she’s thinking, but in the end she’ll save him. Great work!
