SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Black Lion and Angel of Death

This was based on a dream I had about a black lion. In trying to interpret the dream, I ran across some symbology that suggested the lion, plus the color black, was a reference to death. So...I figured the Angel of Death would have a black lion as a 'familiar', along the lines of a witch having a cat, or a wizard having an owl. So this is my visualization of the angel with a black lion. (Exactly why I chose a punk-ish angel, I'm not sure--I guess I thought it would be cooler and more modern than a more Renaissance-type angel.) Done in oils, it didn't come out exactly as I had planned, but I was experimenting with glazing, so I'm quite happy with it. (There isn't any black paint in this, despite the amount of 'black' in it!)

11 Oct 2004	Gregory K. Barrett	Loading... I like how the angel is shown as a male adult instead of those chubby kids I see in department store pictures. Next to the lion, he looks big and would be a tough opponent in battle. The color, shading, and perspective are all very good in this picture.

I like the way you made the angel of death to be a male, to me I think that the death angel should be a male for some reason. I love the colors that you used in the picture the lion and the wings are wonderful. Just to let you know that your right about the color black and the lion to be known as death, black has always been death and in mythology the lion is death because it is the king of the forest. Again I have to say exelent job and keep up the good work.
