SciFi and Fantasy Art: Orca

'Orca circles, hard and lean...'

No, this isn't a wimpy Earth orca. This is the nasty Dragaeran House animal from the Vlad books by Steve Brust, who told me my first version wasn't mean enough. Hope this meets with his approval.

Erghh, teeth.... They look like the sort that could tear you to pieces in seconds leaving just a cloud of blood hanging in the water...eep!

That's some nice convergent evolution you're demonstrating there, Grantham. Pretty clearly not of Earth-cetacean stock, but also pretty clearly filling the exact same niche.

I hope I don't find this thing without a giant orca killing projectile. Anyway, beautiful piece of work!!!! I really love how you did the transition between white and black on the "whales'" skin. Oh, and is it a whale or are those gill shaped lines gills? Don't hurt me.

:-) Katherine J. Grantham replies: "Nope, not a whale, just a mean parallel-evolution sea-nasty. It does have gills, but can also breath air through those nostrils up front, but don't ask me to explain how that's an evolutionary advantage -- it's just how I drew the darned thing!"

looks very mean, however (I know all artists hate that word): I think it's eye looks a little odd for such a mean creature... or maybe it's just me... I think it looks... a little scared, or confused, or angry, rather than jsut plain mean for meanness' sake...

You have a lot more patience than me. Do you use a special ink? All the pens I use end up smearing purple whenever
I erase the pencil from underneath.

Cool Pic! >^-^<

:-) Katherine J. Grantham replies: "Yeah, the eyes look a little wierd because they have a horizontal slit pupil, rather like a goat's eye. The inks I use are a combo -- some Micron Pigma pens for fine work, and various markers or brush and ink for large black areas. "

There's nothing wimpy about orca whales. They're the top predators in the ocean, they have no natural enemies aside from man; not even great white sharks can best them. Comparison of them considering they are real animals to fantasy created other worldly animals is by no means fair either. It is a good drawing though.

Beautiful work, Katherine! I wish I were an artist. Every day. And your work is one of the reasons why.
