SciFi and Fantasy Art: Kylin Sketches

Kylin (in Japanese Kirin, and also spelled Kilin, Qilin, etc.) is the perfect beast of earth in Chinese myth, having the body of a stag, the main of a lion, and the tail of an ox. They seemed rather enchanting and I need a break from my own little world every once in awhile, so I drew these two during class. The upper one was based off a Carribou (reindeer), the lower off a deer stag (red, I think).

I'm in the slow process of computer painting the Caribou version.

I love that you included two poses, very cool Nice picture, it's wonderful!Thank you! The different poses and body types, as well as the realism, are because I started by looking at reference pictures of deer.

12 Dec 2002		Loading... I personally vote on the caribou body type...its body is more substancial and powerful, yet it retains a regal and agile stance as well. Nice job...I'd love to see 'im colored! Thank you! Vote noted. I'm already coloring him in my head.

I'll second the cariboo vote, though it's a tough descsion, though in part because of what gorgeous "life shot" it'd make of the beast actually in motion as the second one is... Tough choice O, & the way you've done the spiralling on the horns is fab, I adore it! Not many people do it so subtly, yet it looks much more like what real spiralled horns do

23 Jan 2004	Jessica 'CelticDragon' Camp	Loading... Awesome work on both of them. You've got a nack for anatomy. I like them both. The deer one's slender and the caribou one's stout, both traits I can imagine a Kilin having. Maybe your colored version should be a mix between the two?
