| 15 Jul 1999 | Elliott Edwards | I was intrigued when I first saw this picture. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but there was somthing in the way that the subject's features were arranged that added interest. I was able, however, to figure it out. Before I tell what I think makes it different, I must say that I like the effect. Now...The eyes of the subject are correctly spaced and accomplished, and the outline of the head is believable also. These two elements, however, are juxtaposed in an unusual way. The eyes hint at a person looking more or less at the viewer, while the face and head show more of a three-quarters turned view. The end result being something not unlike cubism. Oh...and the thing that I couldn't put my finger on is this: The image reminds me of a face made of collaged pictures from a magazine. I hope that you are not offended, because I really do like the result. If this was not your intent, then I suggest the following: make sure that the eyes and features fall on planes that coincide with the curve and shape of the skull. Placement and angle is everything. | |
| 16 Jul 1999 | Maja Ilisch | It's true ... it's hard to take the eyes from her. Yet I think you should try and sketch a number of lips - these do not look as plastical as the rest of her features. If you shade them: The upper lip may be darker in colour, but make sure to stress the lower lip by surrounding it with a thicker line while only hinting the upper one. The actual mouth is the line in between. This will make it look more 3-dimensional. I hope you don't mind me »teaching« you this - I did not figuere it out until I was 23 because no one told me. | |
