SciFi and Fantasy Art: Orchid Throne

This'll probably be a work-in-progress. I included in the scan the bits of the sketchbook so you can see how I ran over... issue of composition, there. There are also issues of perspective. I'm quite happy with some parts, and was somewhat surprised at other parts. I'd like to be able to represent this in less of a comic-book style, too, but I'm not there yet. I'm pretty pleased with the coloring. I used Berol Prismacolors on sketchpaper, and I'm not sure what the ink pen edging is (can't remember). As always, suggestions are welcome. (20 June 2002)

no suggestion, really...
Or maybe you could have shaded more some parts (like the trousers), but otherwise it's a good picture !

:-) Kir talmage-barnes replies: "kjt adds> I think there's more shading in the original than appears in the scann-to-JPG conversion. What do you recommend? Perhaps I should try increasing the contrast in the scans, or in the image maniupulation?"

Very cool, very unique. I like the colours of this the best - seen many prisma colour works around the woods, what exactly are they? Are they colouring pencils?

:-) Kir talmage-barnes replies: "kjt adds > Thanks! Yes, Prismacolors are a tye of color pencil. You'll see them as "Berol Prismacolor"; I think Berol is the manufacturer. They're reasonably thick and soft and waxy; just fun to bring across the page."

I love her pose and expression. She is just sitting there, very lazy and happy it seems. I like the colouring also, I think what it needs is a little more background, to give the wonderful 'flower-chair' a setting. A very imaginary picture, it shows your talent, Kir.

:-) Kir talmage-barnes replies: "kjt replies (shockingly belatedly) > This is great feedback. I wonder what the rest of the room does look like... is the throne against a wall? Backed by windows? In a corner? On a dias? I don't think there's a lot of room left on the page (and the original is on the other side of the continent from me, actually). On the other hand, knowing from this and other comments on other works that I needed to work on backgrounds -- well, I am, much more than when this image was made. So thank you!"

I think it is a good pic... It doesn't really need anything now, except for a cool background... Maybe of a Throne Room

:-) Kir talmage-barnes replies: "kjt says > Hey, thanks! It's great to have a new visitor. You and Anneke are both right: I need a background. I likely won't do one for this pic (given I've already fallen off the edge of the paper), but it's definitely something I need to develop. I haven't uploaded more her in a while (I wait until I have a bunch, because of the ticket system), but if you like, you can also see some other recent work at http://metasilk.deviantart.com and a few brightly colroed bits at http://www.cafepress.com/whimsicaldreams."
