SciFi and Fantasy Art: Checkered Dragon

When I drew this picture I didn't give it a backround but I wanted to enter it in the county fair. Since I always wait until the last minute to do things I quickly gave it a checker board backround and the shading on the dragon is not finished either. The judges loved it for some reason and they gave me fist place in pen and ink and reserve champion (they were wierdos anyway since my brother drew a knight with clouds in the backround and they told him next time to make him standing outside a McDonalds).

1 Apr 2000	Katrina Kennedy	Loading... Ok, they are oficially stupid for telling your brother that. ACK! I can tell you though, you DID deserve 1st place. The plain background isn't bad though. The simplicity is a nice contrast to the dragon's detail.
3 Mar 2002	Lisa Coleman	Loading... Having a picture of simply subject and background can be really boring. Having an ordinary subject, with an unexpected background is great, though. While I like the concept of an abstract background, I think this checkerboard distracts too much frome the beautiful detail of the dragon.
14 Sep 2003	Kat	Loading... Beautiful. But the chessboard-like backround is a bit distracting. You should try your skill at drawing non-evil dragons, like gold, white, etc.
