SciFi and Fantasy Art: Silent Guardians

I created this picture in a contest between my brother, his girlfriend, and myself. I was deemed the winner since I was the only one to finish (the reasons for their dropping out are quite beyond me). But here it is; finished except for a background story to go along with it.

I like the atmosphere of this picture. A nice job on the shading as well. Also the horns and how you can't see his eyes or anything, just gives you a sense of dread.

Great job on the shadowing! I like how he is hunched over on that stone. Wish you would do more in color though... Oh, well. I like the Gothic settings more as well. Keep up the good work!

What I like is that you still get a sense of the creatures presense, what it is, what it looks like, without the picture being really detailes. It also makes it more mysterious and frightening.Joel: Two for frightening, that is good. Fear is a healthy feeling to impart, and to do it successfully is very rewarding. Thank you ladies!

This is a great picture, nice use of value, but the body needs a little more detail...

The guardian is so ominus...i really like him. The shadowing and the lack of indepth detail to the actual "critter" make him seem all the more frightening and fantastical. I really like his stance on the rock too...another good job!

i like the dusky, pre-dawn (post-sunset?) appearance of the shading and the lack of bg...these adds to the ominous nature of the piece...the gargoyle (latin for "gurgle!" useless fact # 566 for the day!), seems to be either arising for the night, or settling to sleep in the morning...what is it about nocturnal creatures that so fascinates us mortals?

Great job on the pose, like he's peering over the edge of a big tower or cliff. Shading is excellent, I love how you used it to define his muscles. The face is the best thing about this pic, it's creepy with the skull-like features.

with the fuzzy detail it makes it look like it`s twilight, which helps him be that little more dread inspiring. Soon as those last few rays of daylight are gone he could awaken once more...
