SciFi and Fantasy Art: The significance of these hands

A peice from 2002, when I first started toying with charcole. Since charcole is the primary drawing medium I've used in my art classes since, I think my grasp of it's possibilities has greatly increased. Still.. I like this peice, and I don't think it shows it's age quite yet, so I think I'll keep it around just awhile longer.
