SciFi and Fantasy Art: Sitting Mermaid

This picture had something to do with studying the effects of dark shadows contrasting with bright lights. I thought it worked well. Although interestingly the scan lightened it; I used a mechanical pencil, smoothing the graphite with an eraser, and when I finished it the sketch appeared very dark. Ah well. Enjoy.

Beautiful! You did an amazingly good job in shading!

I don;t know if it's that the hips need to be smoothed really, just shrunk a bit. You could always say it's a "fancy fin rim" around her torso, like a belt...but the hips would still be a little large.
Those pose is just gorgeous though, she's so well formed and poised...and yes, lovely shading. That tail is just great, and her hair...smashing2 -K

your proportion is wrong on the head it is too broad and the hair leaves the hand at the wrong point unless she is grabbing it but then you would have to have a break in it, Scales?? I think that rendering the hips would make the transition blend and still be obvious ditch the rim thingy it looks bad!! sorry to sound so negative but I'm trying to help not tell you that it's brilliant and then you will have lower standards but keep trying! Oh btw I'm not just some old art critic that sucks and wants to bring others down I'm working on my own art aswell and have had some published and used in minor films and games!..so yea but good

sorry
