| 16 Mar 2002 | Lianna | Heh... doesn't matter in Hindu. Siva can also be Parvati or Kali, depending on whether he/she is in a good mood or not. Interesting to note that the female aspect is always the *active* aspect, which spurs Siva to action. Yeah women!
Very nice job, it's hard to draw all those damn arms without it looking silly, but you've done it admirably!
| 23 Mar 2002 | Faith Fire | Wow! You're the first person I've heard of that actually put the right amount of arms on her! | |
| 15 Jul 2002 | ~izzy~ | Awesome picture! Its real cool. | |
| 1 Aug 2002 | unnamed_spirit | I like it but I have to say this because its really bothering me.... Shiva is not female Shiva is a god not goddess.... He is one of the greatest gods of Hinduism... | |
| 22 Nov 2002 | SilverXphoenix | Excuse me? Does it matter if s/he depicts Shiva as male OR female? I thought that this site was about the art, not the technicalities. Anyway, i reckon that the drawing is more than enough to make up for any background errors. And even though I knew that Shiva was 'meant' to be male, I've always depicted Her as female. Males get nowhere without females, and this goes for Hinduism too (I do believe)... (for example's sake, I'm gonna call Shiva a 'he' here). Shiva gets the 'I' in His name from Kali, His counterpart. If you take away Kali, and the 'I', you gey Shva, which means 'corpse'. Get it?! Ok, maybe not. That was just me ranting. to the point- Very good! )O( ^.~ | |
| 17 Jan 2004 | Ra'akone | Well, thanks to th Final Fantasy series, many tend to think of Shiva as female.....probably the "shi" being taken for "she".....and the fact that in Hinduism, "male" gods don't just have wives, but also "female aspects".....and also the ice element associated in those games (shiva...shiver) tends to usuaully be feminine.
Enough rabitting.....I like the picture, and I like the way the arms are.

| 16 Sep 2006 | Anonymous | In Hinduism, all things are part of Brahaman or "higher reality." There is really no separation between anything, including male and female. Shiva is typically attributed to being male, but he can also be female. The "shakti" aspect is generally the female and active aspect. Maheshvari is a well-known female form of Shiva. The gods' consorts are typically depicted as wifes, concubines, etc. but are in reality simply another aspect of that very god.
So, really, Shiva is without gender. Shiva is *traditionally* shown as male, but can just as easily be shown as female. It is incorrect to say Shiva is specifically male. With Hinduism, there is the "ishta devata" or form of god that appeals to you. If a female Shiva appeals to you, then that is what god may be to you. Your interpretation of Shiva is as correct as any interpretation out there.
