This was made for my mother, and is in fact the front cover of a folder I made for her after one she loved was stolen. I asked her what she wanted and all she said was something colourful and orange. As I didn't have anything specifically orange but I did have a lot of very bright red suede I used that instead.
And what could be more colourful and orange than the Pheonix, rising as if made of living flame from a background of red? Thus the idea was born.
The design was sketched first onto paper then transferred onto the reverse of the suede before being cut with a sharp knife. Contrast fabric, in this case a lovely bit of Thai silk in very bright gold and orange, was then glued to the reverse before the folder itself was covered. The inside (which you obviously can't see) was then covered in a structured and speckled orange paper to match the fabric. The cutting itself took a long time due to all the slim sections and the stretch of the leather but it is certainly something I would try again.
