SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Werewolf

Okay, you got me there is no werewolf in the picture. This was inspired by the Garmarna song of that name (varulven) in which a young maiden on her way through the blue forest encounters a werewolf and offers up (amongst other things) her golden crown in place of her life. The werewolf declines and as her screams echo through the trees her lover rides like the wind to rescue her...Not a pretty song given the ending. Done in watercolours.

This is a really cool pic. I like the whole story behind it and the concept is really cool. The fact that the horse is the frame of the pic makes me think that about how her lover went to rescue her and had her in his heart...and in the pic, he is part of the frame. Not sure if you were thinking about that, but that's really cool. Really nice water color(?) job as well. Lovely.

:-) Linette J. L. Withers replies: "Yep, it's watercolour, with a bit of watered down acrylics mixed in. I like your interpretation of it. Thank you."

It took me a ridicolous amount of time to realise that the gold being held out was actually the crown. I'm not so sure that this is due to poor design at royal decour moreso than the lack of sleep I've had lately..
Other than the bit of fog that I alone may see this is a great picture; I was drawn to comment before I ever clicked on the thumbnail. I like the stark white; it gives the horses' flight a teriffic sense of urgency. I give this a solid A! 2

:-) Linette J. L. Withers replies: "There is a lot of fog in the painting, I messed up the crown and girl the first time, so the final ghost-like effect actually grew out of a mistake. The crown was based on a Swedish wedding crown my mum had, then simplified as the picture is actually very small, which is probably the cause of some of the extra foginess in there 2 Thanks for the A! "

More ballad illustrations in the woods! There are several recordings of that one, in different versions, but Garmarna really made it public property, in a good way. For some reason that very scene has always captivated me, too "...he rode a bit faster than the birds do fly...". But then again, I am a ballad freak. To illustrate some of them is on my want-to-do list (unfortunately now covered by my GOT-to-do-immediately list).

:-) Linette J. L. Withers replies: "I love ballads too. I'm a lyric freak really. When I first got their albums I spent ages translating the words so my friends coudl understand why I liked them so much. When I got to varulven, I think they just thought I was scary..."

A picture within a picture... very clever! And what a good way to tell the story. The painting style is great... very dark and creepy. However I feel like the white border is a bit stark. Not that I could think of anything that would work better.... It's beautiful in a haunting way.

:-) Linette J. L. Withers replies: "I agree, It's a little less stark in real life as the grain of the paper shows up more, as does the paint smoking away from the outline, but next time I think I will use cream paper or a background colour that complements the main picture. Thanks for the comment!"
