SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Mewlips

These are mysterious, nasty creatures from a ”Hobbit” poem by J R R Tolkien. Not much is known about them except that they live beyond the Merlock Mountains and that they have squishy feet, a lust for gold and a taste for human (or hobbit) flesh.

It sure didn't take long for you to get your second mod's choice! 12 Some people have all the talent! Very nice watercolour work - and Tolkien is always a nice topic, of course. The only little detail that strikes me as slightly off is the cobweb ... the structure looks somewhat more like an ordinary net than real cobweb. (Perhaps it's just me ... at any rate, doing white lines on a watercolour picture is by definition a bit of a challenge.)

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "Well, I'm very humbled and happy. Must mean that I'm doing something right. The cobweb is very stylized (or maybe I was just too lazy). Hmm; I might just redo that some day."

Wow: that's nice. Together fun and creepy, I LOVE it (and I love the foreground fish...)

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "Thanks! Humour and horror should go hand in hand, I think."

I so love this one! And that little fish-thing there's just adorable! So cuute! Very nice composition and colouring on this pic! Very nice and creepy! ^^

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "Thanks! I hope I've managed to infuse some sympathy as well into these greedy, ugly, lonely creatures."

This is amaaaazing... You use the colours so well, it makes me jealous... Congrats on the mods choice!!

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "Thank you! I love using watercolors. A picture such as this is 50% experimentation with pigments and water. As you may have guessed Alan Lee is one of my objects of worship."

And they are close relatives to the mudskipper.

That mudskipper is so adorable!

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "I wanted a mudskipper as a pet when I was little."

OMG I absolutely adore this piece! It's amazing!
But to be absolutely honest my favorite part is the little mud skipper at the bottom! I think he'd make a great tattoo... if that's ok with you. I think I'm going ot add him to the list of possible images fo rmy next tat... if it's ok of course

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "I'd be honored to adorn someones body! Let me know how it goes, if you can."

WOW!
You know about the Mewlips! 1 Most people that know J R R Tolkien's work haven't read those poems!
This is a great picture! It's close to what I thought of when I read about the Mewlips! Amazing with the colouring and portrayal!

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "I love Tolkien's "Hobbit" poems. I love most of his poems anyway, but this particular group have a special flavour. I always imagined the Mewlips as something of a cross between zombies and orcs. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!"
