SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Basalt Pillars of the West

It was dark when the galley passed betwixt the Basalt Pillars of the West and the sound of the ultimate cataract swelled portentous from ahead. And the spray of that cataract rose to obscure the stars, and the deck grew damp, and the vessel reeled in the surging current of the brink. Then with a queer whistle and plunge the leap was taken, and Carter felt the terrors of nightmare as earth fell away and the great boat shot silent and comet-like into planetary space.

-H.P. Lovecraft: The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath

I just adore Lovecraft's prose. :)

I'm not familiar with the author this was inspired from, but this makes me want to be! I thought "Wow, that must be the end of the world!" It's fantastic! It reminds me a bit of Narnia, too, the book with Caspian's ship... Anyway, wonderfully done! 2

Those pillars remind me of the pillars in Hobb's books... What are they called again? *hits self upside the head*

Anyway, awesome picture. I liked those books too. 2

You know, this picture gave me the shivers from the first time I saw it, and even now, two years later I haven't changed my mind. You are one of the truly rare artists that successfully translated Lovecraft's literature vision into painting. I envy you, I truly do.
