SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Black Captian

'In rode the Lord of the Nazgul. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgul, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face.

...

The Black Rider flung back his hood, and behold! he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The red fires shone between it and the mantled shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter. 'Old fool!' he said. 'Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!' And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade.'

A piece that I did a while ago based off Tolkiens work. I was always disappointed with the movies rendition of the Witchking's appearance into Gondor, it just lacked the 'umph' from the books. So here is Sauron's Second in command in all his glory. :)

Amazing work ! The only thing i could add is i personally think that the crown should be slightly larger and the sword should be a bit darker, you do amazing work. Good luck

Why is he riding his horse backwards?

OK, I've seen this twice now as an artist's rendition, and in both, the sight of fire between the Witch King's shoulders and crown was interpreted as some sort of floating flame right there, which I suppose words with the flaming blade, but these guys are supposed to be invisible. They exist on a slightly different plane than others, so I always thought the fire described there referred to the burning fields behind him, to accentuate the horror of there being nothing there under his crown.

Despite my little nitpicking, GREAT job! Of the two pictures I mentioned, this is definitely the superior. He just radiates the evil. The movie did it no justice at all.

This is very well done, but it looks more like a headless horseman...I pictured him differently.
p.s. you should draw more mermaids...you're good at them!

It's the headless horseman!!
Fantastic picture, this has to be the best rendition of a wraith that I've ever seen! And the horse is perfection 2 Wonderful job

beautiful is right!! This is amazing. You're completely correct in saying that the movies took the "umph" out of the characters. Now...before anyone flames me, I LOVE the movies...but I'm biased to the books more. ;D of course!
