SciFi and Fantasy Art: Sleipnir

Odin's eight-legged steed from Norse Mythology, accompanied by Odin's two ravens Hugin and Munin.

I slaved over this picture. It took days of pouring over anatomy books and horse magazines, and countless sketches so that I could come up with a feasible skeletal and muscle structure. Just so you know, there's a reason why people always draw eight-legged horses in profile. Its because its bloody hard from any other direction! After finishing the beast, I ignored it for a few months, just sick of looking at it. Then I finished up the background in a few hours, just so I could get it out of the way and work on something else. This is Prismacolor pencils (four colors, to be exact) on beige cardstock. (May 2003)

Wow...that is insane! I can see how frustrated you must have been, but it really paid off! I'm tempted to think "spider" but it's not, it's a highly detailed and well-animated horse...*mind seizes up*

Great job!

Yes, most people draw eight legged beasties in profile, but an ARTIST looks for the more expressive pose (which is inevitably harder). I don't think there can be a better testiment to skill then to pull off a picture like this. Absolutely gorgeous! Odin's blessing upon you!

The face is so good. I prefer horses with a more chiseled look, and this is simply perfect. The legs are very good too, nothing looks odd or out of place...even though there are eight! And the delicate ears and flowing mane are nicely done.
