welcome to the woods mike, check out the farp page (fantasy artist resorce page), it has helpfull info on scanning in images and sizeing them down without loseing quality (it's your scanner, don't let it push you around!)

Backgrounds: don't get carried away, just throw some lines in...anything that the viewer can tell is behind the subject, big ball of smoke & fire, horz. lines that may be clouds...etc. great goo factor btw.
