According to legend, the sirens had their wings pulled off by the Muses themselves, after they dared to challenged to the Muses to a singing contest (the Muses blew the sirens away). In their shame, the sirens fled to Sicily (I think) to engage a new hobby (luring sailor to their doom) in order to forget their humiliation, and mutilation, at the hands of the Muses. | |
