SciFi and Fantasy Art: Crocotta

This is an ilustration of some rather unpleasant doglike animals, Crocottas, who live near battlefields and feed off the fallen soldiers.

I based their good looks on pictures of hyenas and pit bull terriers. So I guess you're right, they do look like hyenas. I believe the Midevial myth of the Crocotta probably originated with someone seeing a hyena. That's why I chose those two species as "models".

You don't see many works on Crocottas here on Elfwood. This piece is nice, I like it. Crocottas have always been my favorite mythical beast and I've never found any works on them. Nicely done, Mate.

WOW a rare site! A crocotta and its actually EATING something..I love it! Like others have said you don't see many of those little buggers. As a mythic side note; Crocottas eat both men and fellow dogs, they can immatate human voices to a degree, and their eyes,if cut out of the beast as it is slain, will turn into slender jewls that once placed under the tongue can give someone the gift of Sight.

This reminds me of lord of the rings:The two towers, when the hyenea rides abushed the people. A little gory, but good job.

to "spider", duh they look like hyenas. they're probably just an exaggeration of it found in ethiopia. also, i leaned that they have extremely powerful jaws. >and i know that 'cause of this:

Documented by Pliny, this offspring of a wolf and dog can be found in Ethiopia. It is said that this creature can break anything with its teeth and can also eat anything. It may be just an exaggeration of a hyena which has very powerful jaws.

(thank you, .infusino. from quizilla.)<

Leucrotta is what I would've called 'em... but very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very good work.
