| 30 Apr 2003 | Jasmin Islam | GORGEOUS! I didn't know that Christianity had adopted/created the idea of the phoenix to express the spirit of Easter. It is a wonderful ideal and this is wonderful needlework.Thank you! Yes, there are many things about Christianity that seem to be forgotten by most people nowerdays. Which is a pity. | |
| 12 Dec 2003 | | I can't do embroidery worth anything, in fact the only thing I can do is sew buttons, and when I saw this I swear my eyes were going to fall out of my head!!!!!! I did not know such things were even possible with a needle and thread.
.:Ashlin:.Well, I've seen some professional hand-embroidery and it can render an image fluid and mistake-free of BOTH sides of the cloth. So this is still only amature work in comparison. | |
| 11 Mar 2004 | Tomer Berman | A really good paint of pheonix.Well, I didn't exactly *paint* it, it's thread on cloth. | |
| 13 Apr 2004 | Amy Smith | That is amazing. Truly amazing. I didn't know it was a Christian symbol, either! That's cool. This picture is inspiring! Thank you! Easter can be a very inspiring time of the year. | |
| 20 Jun 2004 | Anonymous | It's not a Christian symbol. The lore of the Phoenix goes back to the Egyptians, and the most popular concept of the Phoenix in Western culture is attibuted to the Greeks, which was then adopted by the Romans. The phoenix has also appeared in Chinese, Russian, and middle eastern culture. If it ever was a Christian symbol it was hijacked and turned into something else, as early Christians often did with pagan folklore to try and win converts. Natalia Nikitin replies: "I am quite aware of the Phoenix lore and how multi-faceted it is, but it does not make this any less a Christian symbol. A lot that is in ancient myths (just as much as the patterns we see in nature) is a reflection and a pre-figuration of that which is infinately greater. And how much do you know exactly of the history of Christianity to make such sweeping claims? It's like when someone claims all Christianity is a rip-off of Plato, without a faintest clue as to what they're talking about. If you want to know how early Christians really won converts, go read up on how they bore witness to the Truth in their own blood at a time when all kinds of calumny and torture were aimed against them. | 8 Nov 2005 | Erin M. Ramos | What did you embroider that on? When I first saw it I thought maybe it was the shoulder of a dress then decided against it. But that aside, it's a beautiful design, and it's neat to find someone attributing it to Christianity. Most people don't realize that it was a christian symbol at one point. Natalia Nikitin replies: "I did it on a white piece of cloth that I coloured with either dyes or watercolours, I don't remember now. I then incorporated it in the chest part of a dress I made for an art project. Phoenix is an old legend, not of Christian origin, but cerntainly adopted by Christians as a symbol of their faith at some point. " | |
| 30 Dec 2006 | Catrina 'Max' Callahan | Good heavens you embroidered that??? Is embroidered even a word? Well anyways i so thought this was a painting and then i read about it and my jaw dropped. That is the coolest thing i have ever seen. *bows to greatness* Natalia Nikitin replies: "Thanks. It really isn't all that hard if you are patient and dilligent and had a bit of practice. " | |
