SciFi and Fantasy Art: Harpy in Flight

Another being from another world. As the blazing flames of the sun sunk beneath the purple seas of Rho, she flew on the fleeting winds towards her fate. And the twin moons watched her path through the running clouds.

The hair is blowing the wrong way.
Not unless the wind is from behind her.

She is very pretty, (and such a haunted look in her eyes 2particularly beautiful for a Harpy- they are usually portrayed as ugly old women-- but I really like your version- and the colors are beautiful- a very nice piece 2-Laura
Thanks. I don't know that much about harpy mythology, but I wanted to draw one and this is what came out. 2

Influensed by Ronja perhaps? I like the sky and the colors in the wing... She's beautiful. I wish I had wings too. Thanks! I have no idea what Ronja is, so it is unlikely I was influenced by it.

Harpy mythology? Hah. For the Greeks, harpies were vengeful creatures who loved only to torment. (Jason and the Argonauts managed to vanquish some who were being cruel to an old man by eating his food all the time.) In the Forgotten Realms, they are similar, but use a paralyzing song to freeze their victims. However, not all harpies are bad and/or ugly. It all depends on what you think about harpies, like any other mythological creature, such as dragons or elves!
It is a very lovely picture. I especially like the contrast between the warm colors on her wings and the cool colors of the background.

I don't think I had anything more particular in mind than capturing a feeling of flight when I drew this.

It is a marvelous drawing. However, only early harpies looked like beautiful, winged girls which happened to be the sisters of Iris (a Greek deity). Later harpies were shown as wretched monsters with the heads of ugly hags,
crones, etc.

Well, perhaps I didn't feel like drawing an ugly harpy or this is a creature from a different world to that of Greek Mythology (note the unusual moons in the sky). 2

It's marvelous and elegant. Wait! If you do not know Harpy mythology, how did you find out about them???

I may not know the mythology well, but I have heard of them and seen them in other art. 2

The message for Dec 16 2003 was not supposed to be an insult. I just said that because you said you do not know about harpy mythology. Sorry! No need to apologise, your comment was never taken as an insult - on the contrary, you have my thanks for taking the time to make it. 12
