SciFi and Fantasy Art: Legend of the five rings

This is an experimental picture: first time ever I try to draw something oriental.
The old man in the foreground is a Shugenja, that is, a kind of shaman-sorceror; he is from the clan of the phoenix.
The young samurai in the background is a Bushi (warrior) from the clan of the Dragon.
Both are wearing their clan's colours.
The five golden rings represent the five elements: water, air, earth, fire and void.
Thanks to my scanner the picture is crooked !

Well, it blows a way everything I have tried to do in color. Keep it up. I do like all the contrasts and use of colors very much.

Too bad about the poor scan job. This picture is wonderful. I hope to see more in that style.

yes asian themed pictures certainly do have a certain charm to them....i think you've done wonderfully with the composition here, the guy in the foreground dosn't look particulary japaneese but then i know how hard it is to draw faces that look asian...dont know why but most of my efforts never look very asainy.....the robes on the foreground figure could use some more shading and perhaps some smoother curves would add a little to the ribbon, the winswept character in the background is nicley done - all in all a good looking pic

Love the picture. I do some RPG and card games with L5R...Phoenix Clan to be specific...glad to see somebody else with the same interests. Great job.

I'm awed by this. It is a fantastic representation of many Asian things, such as the colour red, the wavy lines, the style of Chinese brush painting...But it also has distinctively western elements in it, like composition, shading, sense of movement and etc...amazing piece of work!!!

I thought the fifth one was spirit? I didn't know it was void. But oh well, as the saying goes, "To each his or her own" so it's cool with me!

It looks great. Probably one of the best oriental pictures that I have ever seen yet. Keep up the great work.

ohhhhh.. WOW! really cool pic! now i just have to read this thing about 5 rings! i like the colors - they just make me stare and stare and stare. absolutely gorgeous...though the symbols look a bit crooked, i mean they don't look like kanji written with brush, but like pictures. you should check some dictionaries or writings. otherwise the image is just right!
