SciFi and Fantasy Art: GhostNot far from where I live, deep in the woods, is the ghost town of Broughton. A thriving and well-populated mining town around the turn of the 20th century, it boasted two grand hotels, one of which was a palatial resort overlooking a lake, as well as a school, a theatre, electric lights, a state of the art phone system, and many amenities not available in most other places at that time. Suddenly, the mines closed, and almost overnight, the town was deserted; later, over a period of time, it was claimed by the forest. The splendid Broughton Arms, a fine Victorian structure standing on a hillside, considered to be one of the most elegant hotels in North America, and possessing the first revolving door on the continent, was deserted, and later destroyed by fire. Once described as palatial and the height of luxury, now only the soaring 8-10 foot high foundations and some of the stone portions of the structure remain. Not many know where to find it. The ruins are vast and incredible. While it was still standing, but deserted, it was rumored to be haunted, and a woman's face was occasionally seen in one of the upstairs windows. Nobody knows who she was, or how she died. My daughter took a series of photographs of the ruins, and one of them is the basis for this picture. The ghost, of course, is of my own making. ^_^ This painting shows the entrance to the basement, and the original was shot while Laura was standing in one of the basement corridors. To the left stood the stairway to the first floor. Past the figure of the ghost is the back yard of the hotel. |
