SciFi and Fantasy Art: Phil's Pussycat

Well one day I was looking at the works of my fave Elfwood artist (sorry everyone else!) Peter Keres. And I thought 'what the hell?' and this was the result of that thought. Now I'm no Peter Keres, so I used me a photo reference. But only for the pose and ideas for where to put shadows. I'd like to mention that this scan isn't very good. Now that that is said... Long live Keres' Cats! heh ^_^ // Updated this pic on 9/16/99 made it darker and improved the shading (and the feet)

from what I can see, yes the proportions do need work. but I think a lot of it can be fixed by changing your drawing position... I'm *guessing* you draw on a flat table, am i right? What it looks like is that the proportions get steadily bigger as you get up to the head, so I'm thinking you had the drawing on the table infront of you and looking at the drawing at an angle caused you to draw the head bigger, feet smaller to compensate for perspective when looking at it from that angle... I used to do this all the time. So my suggestion would simply to be get an angled drawing surface, or make sure you are picking up your drawing constantly and holding it out at arms length to make sure you're getting it right from a head on view, not jsut layin there on the table.

Technical critique: the hips are off proportion with the shoulders, the legs off proportion with the hips, and the feet are off proportion with the legs. The shading is good, subtle, lends some depth to the figure, and the forms from about shoulder up are nice, in particular her expression. Scrap using photo reference though in favor of getting your hands on a musculature and/or anatomy guide. I thinkthe Photo Reference led you astray... trust in your own abilities instead.

I don't know if had received a comment for your technical style. (sorry, bad English)

when you draw a figure, start with the trunk then add chest and the lower trunk (or so in direction) then add the head. take the size of the head and trunk under the body, thats the lange of the legs. then draw the feet and then the rest of the legs.

so i do it, to avoid an un-proportional body.
