SciFi and Fantasy Art: Jump Ship

This jump ship was inspired by various sources, including the new Battlestar Galactica and the Cowboy Bebop movie. Done with Lightwave 3D 8 and Photoshop for textures. These are a couple of frames from a shot on my demo reel that were rendered at a higher resolution. Any comments are welcome of course.  BTW the symbols or "text" you see are just random symbols, they don't translate into anything.

O____O whoa. This is a very well-designed and rendered ship. My jaw is on the floor.

I remember seeing this when it was selected as a mods. And it is still one of the best computer made ships I've seen.

I rather like this one.

Artistic details I like include: dramatic use of light and shade; quite a strong sense of movement; evidence of hits from enemy gunfire. All of these help to create some dramatic tension.

From a (futurologically) technical point of view, I'm intrigued by the oval shape which seems to more or less engulf the pilot (presumably human). Assuming a 'jump ship' flies by bending/folding space, one can readily imagine an oval shape like this containing the element which does the folding. Think of it this way: you want the element to create something like a tunnel through hyper-space; you want the pilot to be kept away from the 'edges' of this tunnel, since they are likely to be unhealthy for him/her.

I'm also intrigued by the arms which sweep forward either side. Perhaps they create some kind of defensive force-field/deflector shield)? The pilot looks highly unprotected otherwise.

What kind of radar or detection equipment is there? In space, you need something to help you search and aim across very great distances. What kind of weapons does it have? Again, they need to be long-range. Does it have a beam weapon? Missiles? Or is it purely a reconnaissance craft? Why is it not painted black to camouflage it (in space)?

One final question. If it does have a human pilot, why does it not have human markings? (Or perhaps they are future human markings ...)

:-) Phil Nolan replies: "Wow, that's a lot of questions. To be honest I never thought up any details at all. I just sketched up a cool design and modeled it. This was also the first time I ever tried making orthographic drawings to work from. Thanks for the commenr!"

You should win something for those textures. I fiddle with 3D stuff sometimes, what do you usually start from? A cube? or do you mesh it?

well designed nice textures
"changes textures on own ship"

only one thing. the Pilot will have a big dead angle where he cant see enemys or whatever. but i am shure there are sensors for that XD

This is very, very realistic. This must have been alot of work, since it is quite hard to render metal- well, I think so. I also like how you did the light. The light in space is different as on earth, and I love how you did it. Awesome work!
