| 6 May 2005 | Cheryl L Berube | Wow! prismacolours? This ... this is amazing! You put me so deeply to shame, I can't even blink! Great wonderful colours, lovely smooth texture! did you use a solvent to make an underpainting? Really beautiful how you used the colours in the image to give the underwater perspective, it looks so lovely and clean! Love the perspective on the leaves and flowers! Hope the little guy gets away! Joshua R. Pinkas replies: "I am so glad to see that others like this as much as I do. And to answer your question, no, no solvents or underpinning, just a quick 5 min sketch done with my mechanical pencil and then hours and hours of work with the prismacolors. The piece was done on bristol board though, which I find to be ideal for colored pencil work. " | |
| 6 May 2005 | Kristen Gardner | No comments?? This is incredible! If it doesn't get a mod's choice the mods are blind. I especially love how well you've shown the surface of the water and the light pattern on the bottom. I'm just not sure whether or not the hand is in the water yet. Joshua R. Pinkas replies: "Well it seems that once again the mods visual acuity has been called into question. Oh well I guess I’m used to it by now, they often overlook my pictures despite what I or others think of them. But I am very glad you enjoyed your viewing enough to comment " | |
| 12 May 2005 | Melinda | *soft laughter* That story is absolutely spiffin'! It's a wonderful picture. I like the light reflections on the bottom, and the details of things that might be found in a pond or the corner of a stream - the pebbles, the root, the water-weed. Also, excellent shadows. The water edging on the lilypads and the bank are well done, but it /is/ hard to tell if that hand is actually in the water or not yet. If it's above, I would think it'd be a little fuzzier - not so clear cut. If not ... I'm not quite sure what could be changed to represent that? Anyway, just my two cents. Beautiful job. | |
| 25 Dec 2005 | Anonymous | this image is amazing its likeness to the koi fish is inexpressible and i just love this sooooooo only 1 word can describe this- WOW! oh btw i love the face and the fishyness! usually when people draw mermaids (or mermen) they make them too human-like. | |
| 7 Mar 2006 | Mallory S. York | Wow!
Beautiful colored pencil work, a lovely angle, and a cute and amusing choice of subject! I found this tutorial via the Color Pencil Techniques tutorial on F.A.R.P. =)
I really love the idea that a Koi Merman could be out there somewhere...
I've got to save this and show it to my family; we have a swimming pool filled with 25-30 very spoiled goldfish who have their own ocean essentially--there's nothing in the entire pool but goldfish, and this pool is about 8' across. ^^; | |

| 23 Feb 2007 | Wilma van Strijp | I love how you did the shimmer of the light trough the water! Must be a beautiful day on top. I hope this little guy notices the hand before it can catch him! | |
