SciFi and Fantasy Art: Balin's Tomb

'Following his lead, the Company passed under the northern arch. They found themselves in a wide corrider. As they went along it the glimmer grew stronger, and they saw that it came through a doorway on their right. It was high and flat-topped, and the stone door was still upon its hinges, standing half open. Beyond it was a large square chamber. It was dimly lit, but to their eyes, after so long in the dark, it seemed dazzingly bright, and they blinked as they entered.
Their feet disturbed a deep dust upon the floor, and stumbled among things lying in the doorway whose shapes they could not at first make out. The chamber was lit by a wide shaft high in the further eastern wall; it slanted upwards and, far above, a small square patch of blue sky could be seen. The light of the shaft fell directly on a table in the middle of the room: a single oblong block, about two feet high, upon which was laid a great slab of white stone.
'It looks like a tomb,' muttered Frodo, and bent forwards with a curious sense of forboding, to look more closely at it. Gandalf came quickly to his side.'

Amazing. This is exactly how I pictured Balin's tomb. I didn't really like how they did it in the movies. It just seemed too...um...can't really tink of a way to describe it. I'm sure you know what I mean, though. I love how you made it look so dark and evil. A person who never read the books or saw the movies would be able to think 'Oh, something bad's about to happen.' Great job, keep it up!!!

ps: to Bored of the Rings. You freakin' a-hole!!! You may not like LotR but that is no reason to go preaching it to high heaven! Keep your opinions to yourself!!! (and find a name that isn't the name of an already-published book!)
Great job, Pete.Thank you very much. In comparison to other elements of the story, I'd have to say that Balin's Tomb wasn't done too badly in the movie. But in general, most things didn't really run in accord with my own imagination, and I just keep plugging away at trying to portray Tolkien's words as respectfully as possible.

Oh my, how perfectly you portrayed this scene! I love the sheild on that one guys back (borimir? Aragorn?). The colors are fantastic! It feells like old parchment.
I love the books, which are definitly some of the best of all time, HANDS DOWN. But I love the movies too, I just think of them as seperate things. (and I know you don't agree, but I think viggo mortensen was perfect for that role.)(but they left out Glorfindel, one of the coolest characters!)I think that if a film is based on a book, they shouldn't be two separate things, since the film medium should adhere to the originality of the book and it's author. Anyway, thank you for the comment. The shield is Boromir's.

I also like this one a lot. I know how you said you said you lose detail, but this is great anyway! I really like the bones and broken weapons in the back. Another job well done. Thanks a lot.

Amazing. I'm studying fine art at University so I appreciate seeing other people's works. This is a fantastic piece. You have a real patience with watercolours, which is very good. I can see you've put great care and attention into this.

You should be proud.I am indeed, moreso when I receive lovely comments such as yours. Thank you.

This really is a beautiful piece. Especially considering it's a water colour painting, which are so hard to get right. I love how you made the shaft of light so brilliant while somehow lending darkness to the corners and shadows. This combined with the old bones of bodies long dead with their weapons along side, seems to tell of fell deeds long past and yet still provides an air of malevolent danger lurking just around the corner.

This picture has a strange and profound depth to it. The shaft of light, the still silence and the corpses nearby. All still holding their weapons, that are all of dwarven make. For me this seen is painfully sad, for it conjours the feelings of great loss (Moria was great city, perhaps even an empire) and stifling hopelessness.

But I suppose i'm rambling. You do the seen justice by applying not just beauty and realism, but understanding and love. You have great talent, so I must count myself lucky to have witnessed it.

And don't give up on your heart and mind for the world! For in your art, the world may be yours, if only for a day.Wow, thank you so much. This comment means a lot to me. All your observations indicate the things that I wish others to see in my illustration, so it certainly gives me confidence that I may be doing something right. Again, thank you very much. *bows*
