SciFi and Fantasy Art: Eärendil the MarinerNow Eärendil came fast in friendship with Cķrdan the Ship-wright, who dwelt on the Isle of Balar with those of his people who escaped from the sack of the Havens at Brithombar and Eglarest. With the aid of Cķrdan Eärendil built Vingilot, the Foam-flower, fairest of the ships of song; golden were its oars and white its timbers, hewn in the birchwoods of Nimbrethel, and its sails were as the argent moon. In the Lay of Eärendil is many a thing sung of his adventures in the deep and in lands untrodden, and in many seas and in many isles; but Elwing was not with him, and she sat in sorrow by the mouths of Sirion. JRR Tolkien: The Silmarillion: Chapter 24: Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath

But his father, Tuor, had the typical golden-hair of the House of Hador. And his mother Idril, though of the Noldor, retained the golden-hair of her Vanyarin great-grandmother, Indis the Fair. So I imagine he would have had golden-hair as well.
| 19 Dec 2003 | Anonymous | This is just beautiful. Thank you for the whole last update - but I've got to say *this* pic made my day. Ah ... sorry, no intelligent comment. I'm too dazed by this.Oh, that's fine by me . Thanks for the nice comment. | |
| 26 Dec 2003 | Dave | Love the way you paint the sea. And I like the detail put into Eärendil. Beautiful pic man. Thanks a lot. | |
| 29 Dec 2003 | Hellga | It is a beautiful portrayal of Earendil, the best one I have found so far. And it is nice to find an artist who remembers that Earendil had golden hair. *bows and hugs**who bows in return* Wow, thanks a lot! I'm glad you like this portrayal of him. | |
| 24 Jan 2004 | elfchick | AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!aLTHOUGH I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO READ THIS BOOK YET THE PIC. IS SOOOO GOOD !!!Thanks for the enthusiastic comment. You should really check this book out if you get the chance. It's truly remarkable. | |
| 15 Feb 2004 | Anonymous | Thank Eru! For once, Earendil doesn't have a beard!!!!Eärendil? With a beard?! No, no, that won't do at all! Not with Idril as his mother -- I don't even picture his mortal father having a beard. | |
| 29 May 2004 | Hannah | I love the book. Findulias i smy elvish namesake, so I guess I feel a connection to this book. THanks. I love all of your artwork. And U actually care enough to reply to comments!Of course! If one takes time to comment on my work, it's only fair that I repay the favour. Thank you very much. | |
| 18 Jun 2004 | Sajaca | i completely agree - earendil cannot, would not, should not ever have a beard. not with his heritage. the water is fantastic! i can't draw waves for the life of me. did you use a photo? the colors captured in the sunlight are unbelievable. have you ever read c. s. lewis's The Voyage of the Dawn Treader? (Narnia is mother's milk to me. well, that and copious amounts of cookie dough!)in the first chapter, lucy is in the room that she is staying in at her cousin eustace's house, and admires a painting on the wall of a ship. "... and the water looks as if it were really wet. And the waves look as if they were really going up and down." that quote immediately popped into my head when i saw this pic. absolutely lovely. i also like earendil's hair. nice colors. however, i have issues with the seagull. i'm so sorry darling, i in no way intend to impugn your work, but the way the bird is placed (or rather, the where of it) is distracting. it draws all of my attention to the left side of your drawing, detracting from the sea. he is rather cute though. well, as always, good work. beautiful picture. many kudos and all that! Wow, thanks for taking the time to type such a lengthy comment. I appreciate it. | |
| 21 Mar 2006 | Tinselle | This is so beautiful. I really love the lay of Earendil the Mariner and I think you have really captured the picture...I can imagine the ship on the tossing waves and spray of saltwater...I love the sea and grew up by it. Anyway great job, this is beautiful.Ah, so you have the sea in your blood? Well it's nice to receive a compliment such as this then. Thanks a lot! | |
| 15 May 2006 | Hana Běťįkovį | Yes, the waves are amazing! I just got that feeling in my legs, which I'm familiar with since I was on the sea for the first time - the way you have to keep balance... The waves look exactly as I remember them. And I also love his hair!I'm glad you like this piece, it was nice to paint and of course a bit different since the sea was involved. Thank you. | |
