SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Battle of the Morannon

'All about the hills the host of Mordor raged. The Captains of the West were foundering in a gathering sea. The sun gleamed red, and under the wings of the Nazgūl the shadows of death fell dark upon the earth. [...] The onslaught of Mordor broke like a wave on the beleagured hills, voices roaring like a tide amid the wreck and crash of arms.'

JRR Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: Book VI, Chapter 4: The Field of Cormallen

I like the way that you show just a small scene of the battle where, for once, not the 'heroes' are shown, but rather ...the struggle of every single individual soldier. alot of artists and also movies (though in my opinion the lotr movies are prety good regarding this aspect) make battles look like the duel of either side's 'heroes' and the soldiers are more like... background for those grand shots of grand armies.. you know what i mean 12
i like how you have the two banners on either side of the picture and the rider in the middle, parting the armies in a way.. i also love the way the 'upwards-sticking-spears' ar a kind of constant in the picture, going ever onwards into the background and showing the sacle of the battle. i also like all the different dsigns for the orcs, some looking more 'ape-ish' some 'rat-ish' and others... 'dead-ish' ^^
all in all i thinks it's safe to say: i LOVE this picture =D

Think you should draw the scene, where Pippin kills the troll and saves Beregond. No one has actually tried it.

Well... that's maybe a little tóó much blood? Well, it ain't orc blood either... but I'm a fool so don't listen to me...

There's an orc, right below the head of the horse, he's got black eyes and he's staring right at me, and GOSH... He's CUTE! I never ever thought I was gonna say that about a lotr orc. And he's not pretty. He looks like a orc, ugly with sharp teeth and dirty and filthy. But he's cute.

Well, amazingly character design for all the persons in the picture. Keep up the wonderful work!

This is an amazing picture, like somthing you would see in an actual medieval history book, or an art museum or somthing. I love the detail, and the people look really lifelike. I hope to one day be able to produce good art like this. Great job, Keep it up.
