SciFi and Fantasy Art: Treebeard'They found that they were looking at a most extraordinary face. It belonged to a large Man-like, almost Troll-like, figure, at least fourteen foot high, very sturdy, with a tall head, and hardly any neck. Whether it was clad in stuff like green and grey bark, or whether that was its hide, was difficult to say. At any rate the arms, at a short distance from the trunk, were not wrinkled, but covered with a brown smooth skin. The large feet had seven toes each. The lower part of the long face was covered with a sweeping grey beard, bushy, almost twiggy at the roots, thin and mossy at the ends. But at the moment the hobbits noted little but the eyes. These deep eyes were now surveying them, slow and solemn, but very penetrating. They were brown, shot with a green light.' so sad what they did to the ents in the movie. I mean, they've been there before the world was even made, so how would a 30yr old hobbit know more than them?
not that i dislike merry or anyhing, but its so depressing, what they did to bombadil, glorfindel, faramir etc.
BUT the battle scenes were good!
i do hope they do the hobbit, or have a go at the silmarillion. they would of course have to cut bits out, but i promise i wouldnt pay them ouit too much if it was ok!
*rambling again* sorry... i can talk about lotr for a long time... again, GREAT PIC!In my opinion PJ just made the Ents looks slow (which they are in the book) -- not in the wise 'non-hasty' manner that Tolkien wrote for them, but in the dumb, stupid kind. And that was a mistake. But anyway, thanks for the comment. | |

I have to admit, i enjoyed the "ents going to war" scene, even if it was entirely incorrect and they never sang the "boom, boom, etc." song, but you're right, they were made out to be rather thick. Annoying, that. You draw really well!  *cookie_monster*Thank you very much indeed! Yes, I don't know. There was just something simply lacking with the portrayal of the Ents in the film -- just didn't seem to mix with the ancient majesty of the books so well. | |
| 14 Jun 2005 | Satya | This is a wonderful picture of a wonderful character from Tolkien's truly remarkable mythology. You are just so good at painting trees. I think that's why you have very skillfuly dealt with your rendition of Treebeard. The texture of his skin, hair and beard are superb. I can find no other words to describe But its his eyes that I really love! To me, they reflect not only the wisdom of the ages, but also his kindly nature and the mirth he was capable of, despite all the wrongs inflicted upon the forest. He looks as if he's giving some sound advice to some young sapling, or perhaps to one of the hobbits. My only critique, if I may, is actually very minor in my eyes. It isn't that apparent, but his right eye is lacking in eybrow whn compared to his left. But the rest of the picture makes me more than happy to ignore the fact. On the whole its an excellent depiction of everyone's favourite Ent! I think the main thing that's sorely lacking is a little yellow star on the top right-hand corner of the picture! Ah, thank you once again my friend for the lengthy comment, as ever full of insight and praise that an artist can only ever dream of. It really is appreciated, beleive me. By the way, Satya. Remember that request you asked of me a long time ago? Well, it's finally finished, and in the ticket queue as I speak right now. I'm so sorry for taking as long on it as I did, but I'm so busy nowadays and have much less time for painting then I'd like.
